    Hiking

The Gin Lin Trail is a short trail in the Rogue River–Siskiyou National Forest and takes you through an historic mining site from the 1850s. It is named after Gin Lin, a Chinese miner, who travelled to Oregon during the gold rush. Along the trail through a light forest canopy, you will find several informative signs about the mining history.

Embark on an easy hike along the Gin Lin Trail, a short 0.8-mile (1.4 km) route that takes about 24 minutes to complete. You will gain 157 feet (48 metres) as you wander through a light forest canopy, offering a peaceful natural setting. Keep an eye out for the notable viewpoint overlooking the Applegate River, a perfect spot to pause and take in the surroundings. This gentle path is ideal for a quick outdoor escape, suitable for beginners and families.

Planning your visit to the Gin Lin Trail is straightforward, with parking generally available right at the trailhead. While the route is easy, be mindful of poison oak that can grow near the trail's edges. If you plan to hike during the summer months, be aware that ticks and rattlesnakes are more active. For a more comfortable experience with cooler temperatures and fewer pests, consider visiting between October and May.

What truly sets the Gin Lin Trail apart is its rich historical significance, leading you directly through the remnants of Gin Lin's hydraulic mine. As you follow the path, you will spot fascinating artifacts like riveted iron pipes and large rock mounds, known as "tailings." Numbered posts along the way help you understand the historical sights and the mining process, giving you a unique glimpse into the past.
