Melbourne City Baths were opened in 1904 as public baths with a swimming pool and bathing facilities. They underwent extensive renovations in the early 1980s and are today considered one of Melbourne's most architecturally and historically significant buildings.
The Melbourne City Council opened the first City Baths, which housed public baths, on January 9, 1860. The aim was to discourage people from bathing in the Yarra River, which was quite polluted in the 1850s and caused a typhoid epidemic that hit the city and resulted in many deaths.
