During the reign of James I between 1382 and 1388, the small Byzantine fortress near the port was expanded into a more important castle.
During British rule, the castle was used as a prison with a gallows installed. The last execution took place in 1948.
After Cyprus gained independence, the castle was turned into a museum and the courtyard was converted into an open-air theater with 200 seats.
