Veldenstein Castle is a large, well-preserved medieval hilltop castle above Neuhaus an der Pegnitz at the southern end of the Veldenstein Forest, about 50 kilometers northeast of Nuremberg in Bavaria.

Hiking

Veldenstein Castle was first mentioned in 1269 in a document enfeoffed by the Bishop of Bamberg. The expression "the new house", Latin novum castrum, is mostly used for the castle at this time. It then appears for the first time in a document dating from 1323 and 1327 as “Neuhaus Castle – called Veldenstein”. From the 15th century the complex was further expanded. Representative episcopal apartments must have existed at this time.
