The branch was founded around 1300 near a Holy Cross Chapel. In 1313 there was already talk of a monastery. Perhaps it was initially a matter of a settlement of pious women at a pilgrimage church that was conveniently located on the trade route from Nuremberg via Saalburg, Schleiz and Gera to Leipzig.
