Cycle the easy Spruce Railroad Trail for 11.3 miles (18.1 km) as you follow the shores of Lake Crescent. You will experience expansive views of the jewel-blue water, winding through dense forests of maple, Sitka spruce, and hemlock. The route gains a gentle 370 feet (113 metres) in elevation, making it a relaxed ride that takes about 1 hour and 5 minutes to complete. You can also explore the historic Daley Rankin Tunnel and see the Devil's Punchbowl, a deep, clear blue pool accessible via a short side trail.
When planning your visit, be aware that while the trail is generally smooth, a portion west of Camp David Junior Road has experienced closures due to landslides in the past. The Daley-Rankin Tunnel is fully accessible after renovations, ensuring the entire route is open for touring cycling. Parking is available at the trailhead, providing easy access to this popular path. The area also has a unique microclimate, often warmer and drier than nearby regions, which can influence your ride.
The Spruce Railroad Trail offers a unique blend of natural beauty and history within Olympic National Park. It's a fantastic option if you are looking for a scenic and accessible touring bicycle route that showcases the region's distinct environment. The trail's path through old-growth forests and along the lake provides a different perspective on the park's diverse landscapes, making it a notable destination for a leisurely ride.
