The Old Mill Fuel Building – Banks Vernonia State Trail loop from L.L. Stub Stewart State Park offers a delightful road cycling experience through a varied Oregon landscape. You'll pedal through lush, pine-scented forests, past open glades, and alongside babbling streams, with the impressive Buxton Trestle providing a memorable viewpoint. The route follows an old railroad bed, making for a generally gentle grade, though you'll encounter some elevation changes and sections where tree roots have created bumps in the pavement.
This moderate 25.7-mile (41.3 km) loop, with 1051 feet (320 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes just under two hours. L.L. Stub Stewart State Park is a convenient starting point, offering parking and facilities. While many ride it on road bikes, the inconsistent pavement means a gravel or cyclocross bike might be more comfortable, especially if you prefer higher speeds. It's a fantastic option for a car-free ride, popular with cyclists of varying skill levels.
As Oregon's first "rails-to-trails" project, this route repurposes a historic lumber railway, giving it a unique character. Beyond the cycling, the trail is known for its diverse wildlife, from hawks to coyotes, and the surrounding forests of Douglas fir, maple, and cedar. The towns of Banks and Vernonia, connected by the full trail, offer additional amenities, making it easy to extend your adventure or grab a post-ride refreshment.
