The Bird to Gird Pathway offers an exceptional road cycling experience along the scenic Turnagain Arm, treating you to continuous, spectacular views of mountains, glaciers, and the ocean. You'll ride through diverse landscapes, from marshy tidewater turf with skeletal trees to birch and spruce forests, with opportunities to spot beluga whales in the inlet and Dall sheep on the mountainsides. This moderate 30.1-mile (48.5 km) route, with 1098 feet (335 metres) of elevation gain, is entirely paved and can be completed in about 2 hours, making it a rewarding ride for most cyclists.

Accessing the Bird to Gird Pathway is convenient, as it connects the communities of Girdwood, Bird, and Indian, providing various entry points. The trail is well-equipped with numerous rest stops, benches, picnic tables, and some restrooms, enhancing your comfort during the ride. While generally considered easy to moderate, the presence of some gentle hills means it's not entirely flat, so be prepared for a few gradual climbs. Consider starting your ride earlier in the day to secure parking, especially during peak times.

This designated National Recreation Trail is notable for its historical significance, with parts following old highway alignments and rail beds. Beyond the stunning scenery, the pathway offers unique wildlife viewing opportunities, from marine mammals in Turnagain Arm to mountain goats on the slopes. Interpretive signs along the route provide insights into geologic features, local wildlife, and avalanche mitigation, enriching your journey through this beautiful Alaskan landscape.
