The Buffalo Peak Trail offers a difficult jogging experience, covering 4.2 miles (6.7 km) with a significant elevation gain of 1260 feet (384 metres). You can expect to complete this demanding route in about 1 hour and 4 minutes. The path winds through varied terrain, starting with scrub oak and coniferous trees, before opening up to expansive 360-degree views from the summit. From this high point, you will see Utah Valley, Utah Lake, and prominent peaks like Mount Timpanogos and Cascade Peak. Look for vibrant wildflowers in spring and early summer, or rich foliage during the fall months.
To access the trailhead, you will drive on Squaw Peak Road. Be aware that the final few miles often become a bumpy, unpaved dirt road, though it is usually manageable for a regular car if driven slowly. It is essential to bring enough water for your jog, as there are no water sources available directly on the trail. Leashed dogs are welcome to join you on this adventure, so plan accordingly for their hydration needs as well.
This trail is situated within the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, offering a true mountain escape. The diverse ecosystem you encounter, from scrub oak to coniferous forests, highlights the region's natural beauty. The panoramic vistas from Buffalo Peak are a major draw, providing a unique perspective of the surrounding Utah landscape. This route stands out for its challenging ascent and the rewarding views it provides over Utah Valley and its iconic peaks.
