    Hiking

Being that these trails are essentially dirt roads in a very dry environment, when it rains, they can get washed out and washboarded. Not an issue for hiking, but if you have a stroller or all-terrain wheelchair, it can be cumbersome.

Embark on the Willow Canyon and Big Bend Trail Loop, a moderate hiking route that offers a rewarding challenge. This 5.1-mile (8.3 km) journey will have you gaining 778 feet (237 metres) in elevation, typically taking about 2 hours and 28 minutes to complete. You will traverse varied terrain, from wide dirt paths to rocky sections and uneven fire roads, winding through peaceful oak and sycamore woodlands that provide welcome shade. As you hike, keep an eye out for the distinctive rocky formations along Willow Canyon and the cacti that often mark trail junctions. Elevated sections of the trail open up to panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the stunning coastline of Laguna Beach.

Before you head out, it is important to know that this trail is located within Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. Always check the park's status before your visit, especially after any rainfall, as trails may be closed for up to three days due to washouts and muddy conditions. Since this is a multi-use trail, you should remain alert for mountain bikers who might approach quickly. Planning your trip for a clear, dry day will ensure the best experience on the route.

This loop is nestled within the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, an area known for its unique coastal canyon ecosystems. The park is a significant natural preserve, protecting some of the last remaining coastal canyons in Southern California. Hiking here offers a chance to experience the diverse plant life and geology of the region, including the frequent rocky formations you will encounter. The trail provides a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature in a protected environment, offering a glimpse into the natural heritage of Laguna Beach.
