The Mori Point and Sweeney Ridge Loop offers a dynamic hiking experience, blending dramatic coastal scenery with expansive ridge-top views. You'll traverse varied terrain, from boardwalks through wetlands near Mori Point to steep, rugged singletrack leading up to Sweeney Ridge. From the ridge, the panorama is breathtaking, encompassing the Pacific Ocean, San Francisco Bay, and even the Farallon Islands on clear days, making the 7.0-mile (11.3 km) journey with 1376 feet (420 metres) of elevation gain well worth the effort.
Planning your visit means preparing for a moderate hike that typically takes 3 hours and 30 minutes. While no permits are needed, remember that much of the trail lacks shade, so bring ample water and sun protection, especially during warmer months. Spring is an ideal time to visit, as the hillsides burst with vibrant wildflower blooms, adding another layer of beauty to the already stunning landscapes.
Beyond the natural beauty, the area holds fascinating history, from its past as a limestone quarry to remnants of an old Nike missile site on Sweeney Ridge. You can also visit the Portola Discovery Site, which offers historical context and views across the bay. Keep an eye out for California Red-legged Frogs in the wetlands and pelicans around Snail Rock, adding unique wildlife spotting opportunities to your adventure.
