    Hiking

Cap Leucate is the only cliff in the coastal area of the Occitanie region, between the mouth of the Rhône (Camargue) and the Côte Vermeille. Cap Leucate is mainly formed by Pliocene lacustrine limestones, which are more than 40 metres thick here.[1] These Pliocene limestones, which drop steeply into the Mediterranean at Cap Leucate (here in the broader landscape sense) (approximately 40 - 60 m), form a spectacular cliff that is unique in the Languedoc-Roussillon.

Le Sentier du Guetteur – round trip from La Franqui

    7.45km

    90m

    90m

The Le Sentier du Guetteur trail plunges you into a vibrant Mediterranean landscape, where the scent of garrigue mingles with the sea breeze. You'll walk along the top of limestone cliffs, enjoying 180-degree panoramic views of the Gulf of Lion and wild coves with crystal-clear waters. On clear days, you might even spot the Corbières and the majestic Canigó peak in the Pyrenees, a visual experience that connects you with the immensity of the region.

This 4.6-mile (7.5 km) route is an easy hike, with only 281 feet (86 metres) of elevation gain, taking approximately 1 hour and 59 minutes. The starting point is La Franqui, and while parking is usually accessible, I recommend arriving early, especially during peak season, to secure your spot. It's an ideal option for a morning or evening excursion, perfect for almost any fitness level.

In addition to the stunning coastal views, the trail takes you past the historic Fort de la Haute Franqui, a restored 18th-century fortification that adds a cultural touch to your adventure. You'll also pass near the Leucate lighthouse, a distinctive landmark. The Grazel area, at the start of the trail, is a birdwatcher's paradise, with flamingos and cormorants, making it a fascinating spot for nature lovers.
