    This is where the old village of Ixelles once stood, one of the 19 municipalities of Brussels. The Maelbeek, which has its source a little higher near the abbey of La Cambre, formed here natural ponds in which the monks raised fish. Two of these ponds are still visible, the third having been filled in and transformed to create this square. The Maelbeek was vaulted.

    The magnificent building of the Institut national de Radiodiffusion, which broadcast from 1930 to 1960, is a listed Art Deco building by architect Diongre, nicknamed "le Paquebot".
