    Hiking

Grimshaw Lake, named after Edwin Lewis Grimshaw, was created by building a dam on the stream coming from the hot springs of the Tecopa Mountains. The lake was created to attract ducks to the area for hunting, but It's now part of an important ecosystem as a home for several flora and fauna.

Embark on an easy hike along the Grimshaw Lake Nature Trail, a route that follows the flat grade of an old railroad bed. This 3.2-mile (5.2 km) path features diverse desert scenery, with natural springs feeding Grimshaw Lake and another unnamed lake, complete with a bench for views. You will gain only 88 feet (27 metres) in elevation, making it a gentle walk that takes about 1 hour and 19 minutes to complete. Keep an eye out for migratory birds and waterfowl in this wildlife-rich corridor. Dramatic mountains provide a scenic backdrop as you explore the area.

When planning your visit, be aware that the trail offers no amenities or shade, so come prepared with water and sun protection. Accessing the trailhead might require a high-clearance vehicle; alternatively, you can park along the road and walk a short distance to begin your hike. During the summer months, you might encounter biting flies, so it is a good idea to bring insect repellent. Consider an early morning or late afternoon start to avoid the midday heat, especially in warmer seasons.

The Grimshaw Lake Nature Trail is situated within the Amargosa River Natural Area, highlighting its importance as a wildlife-rich corridor. This region is known for its unique desert ecosystem, where natural springs create vital oases for various species. The presence of two lakes, fed by these springs, makes the area particularly notable for birdwatching. You can experience a unique blend of desert landscapes and unexpected water features on this route.
