    Hiking

Cool off in the Aztec Cave, the main highlight of the Aztec Cave trail. The most widely-accepted theory about the cave's formation is that it is a result of massive air pockets in ancient lava. Enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Rio Grande Valley from this point.

The caves are pretty cool, and you can even scramble up above them and hop onto other trails in the park. There are sweeping views back behind you the entire climb up.

For a quick dose of desert beauty and expansive views, the Aztec Cave Trail is a fantastic choice. This easy 0.7-mile (1.1 km) hike takes you through classic Chihuahuan Desert landscapes, where you might spot local wildlife among the lechuguilla and ocotillo. The highlight is reaching the Aztec Caves, which not only provide a cool respite but also open up to magnificent panoramic vistas of the Rio Grande Valley and the distant Organ Mountains. It's a short but rewarding journey, perfect for a family outing or a scenic break.

Accessing the trail is straightforward, with a dedicated parking area available at the trailhead within the Tom Mays Unit of Franklin Mountains State Park. Given the desert environment, it's wise to plan your visit for the cooler parts of the day, especially during warmer seasons, and always bring plenty of water. The trail is generally manageable, but wearing sturdy shoes is recommended due to some potentially loose rock sections.

The Aztec Caves themselves are a unique geological feature, believed to have formed as ancient lava air pockets, and hold historical intrigue with evidence of past human presence. This trail is one of the most popular routes in the park, offering a high payoff for its easy 170 feet (52 metres) of elevation gain, which can be completed in about 21 minutes. It's a great way to experience the natural and historical charm of the Franklin Mountains.
