    Hiking

Excellent panoramic point over the town of Pontechianale and the lake (reachable in a few minutes' walk from the center and making a small detour from the path)

Cima Bardia – loop tour in Valle Varaita

Embark on the difficult Cima Bardia – loop tour in Valle Varaita, an 8.7-mile (14.0 km) hike that challenges you with 3912 feet (1192 metres) of elevation gain over approximately 6 hours and 45 minutes. This route takes you through alpine and unpaved paths, demanding sure-footedness as you ascend steep ridges. You'll traverse grassy slopes and scree, with a short, challenging section of turf and small rocks near 2800 meters. From the summit of Cima Bardia, you can enjoy expansive views of wide, flowery alpine meadows and lush coniferous woods, including distant glimpses of Pontechianale Lake. The trail offers breathtaking panoramic views throughout, making the demanding terrain worthwhile. You will find sections that require careful footing, especially on the steep, sometimes pathless ridge leading to the summit. The path to the summit transitions from grassy areas to scree, adding to the alpine experience.

To prepare for this hard hike, ensure you have very good fitness and sure-footedness. Sturdy shoes and alpine experience are highly recommended for the significant elevation changes and challenging sections. The trail starts near a parking lot in Genzana, making access straightforward if you are driving. It is not advisable to attempt this trail with abundant snow, so plan your visit during suitable seasons. Be aware that parts of the trail within the valley can be deteriorated due to past flooding, though they generally become more marked within a larch forest.

The Cima Bardia is situated on a ridge that extends from Cima di Pienasea to Monte Peyron, part of the Chambeyron Massif in the Cottian Alps. The Valle Varaita region itself is renowned for its diverse natural environment, featuring dense coniferous and deciduous forests, green pastures, and spectacular mountain peaks. You will hike under the watchful gaze of Monviso mountain, often called the "King of Stone." This area is one of the Occitan valleys of Piedmont, rich in natural beauty and vibrant local culture. The Lanzetti-Crotto Trail, connecting the villages of Chianale and Pontechianale, is also a notable segment within this broader region.
