In Dutch: Basiliek van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw, the Basilica of Our Lady is impressive.
It looks more like a fortress at its west facade than a simple religious monument. This Romanesque church in the center of the Dutch city of Maastricht is also known for its richly carved capitals.
Admission is free, but if you want to see its treasure and the cloister you must pay a ticket.

On the spot where the Basilica of Our Lady now stands, there was already a small church in the 5th century. It was probably the oldest Christian church in the Netherlands and was possibly built on top of the remains of a Roman temple. In the base of the westwork, two enormous stones can still be found, which originate from the Roman fort. The Church of Our Lady, or ‘Slevrouwe’ as the people of Maastricht call it, is a beautiful example of Romanesque architecture.
