Built for the Craven Lime Company in 1873, this kiln had 22 firing chambers and limestone was burned without a break around the kiln in a circuit, which took six weeks, according to the information board here.

If you are a history buff, and not just into the big figures like Henry VIII and Winston Churchill, but like the small social history, this is a place to be. Fascinating stuff.

This route, which typically takes around 2 hours and 37 minutes to complete, guides you through the scenic Ribble Valley. You'll experience gently sloping landscapes and captivating riverside views, with the highlight being the powerful Stainforth Force waterfall. The trail also winds through charming woodland and limestone areas, offering chances to spot local wildlife like wagtails and dippers.

When planning your visit, be aware that the trail can become very muddy and slippery, especially after rain. You will also encounter some difficult stiles along the way. If you intend to explore inside the historic Hoffmann Kiln, bringing a torch is recommended as it can be quite dark and damp within its 90-meter-long tunnel. Stainforth village, your starting point, provides convenient public facilities including toilets and pubs.

This loop offers a unique blend of natural beauty and industrial heritage within the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
