The island is situated between the Minnesota River on one side and the Mississippi River on the other. It was regarded as a sacred place by the Dakota Indians, as it marks the point where these two great rivers converge. One can observe a subtle distinction where they meet, as the Minnesota River carries sediment and has a slightly muddier color compared to the clearer waters of the Mississippi River.

    Pike Island Trail

The Pike Island Trail offers a serene escape into nature, tracing a gentle loop around the island at the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers. You'll wander through a lush deciduous forest, enjoying frequent river views and the chance to spot wildlife like bald eagles and beavers. The trail is primarily flat, transitioning from a paved start to a natural dirt or gravel path, making it an easy 3.7-mile (6.0 km) hike that feels far removed from the nearby urban environment.

Planning your visit to this urban oasis is straightforward, though a Minnesota State Park vehicle permit is required for entry to Fort Snelling State Park. The trail is accessible year-round, with each season bringing its own charm, from spring wildflowers to fall foliage. Expect the 1 hour and 31 minutes hike to be mostly flat, but be aware that sections can become muddy after rain, so appropriate footwear is a good idea.

This trail holds deep historical significance as "Bdóte," a sacred site for the Dakota people, and it's also known for its rich wildlife viewing opportunities. Despite its proximity to the Twin Cities, the island maintains a peaceful atmosphere, with only hikers and walkers allowed on the main loop. It's an excellent choice for family-friendly hikes or anyone seeking a tranquil natural experience with minimal elevation gain of just 48 feet (15 metres).
