The statue was unveiled in 1996 with the help of Sjaak Mulders and Mon van Casteren. In the butter period, these two drove armored cars and scattered crow's feet while driving. The statue was four years old when it was unveiled. It was manufactured by Constant Grooten in 1992. In that year both Baarles celebrated their millennium. It was obvious that this was commemorated with a statue entitled 'The Smuggler'. Both Baarles have an illustrious history of smuggling, which is cherished by tourists.
