    Hiking

Valley made up of large limestone ridges and thick vegetation made up of shrubs.
These gullies were created by the corrosive action of rainwater. There are numerous caves to visit in the valley.

Embark on The caves of the Valley of Hell trail, a moderate hike spanning 6.3 miles (10.2 km) with an elevation gain of 1327 feet (405 metres), typically taking around 3 hours and 10 minutes to complete. You will navigate varied terrain, from asphalted hairpin turns to dirt paths, passing through both shady and sunny stretches. Keep an eye out for the natural arch known as the "Occhio del Diavolo" as you enjoy panoramic views of the Campania plain and the Somma-Vesuvius volcanic complex, including the older Mount Somma and the younger Vesuvius cone. The valley, despite its name, is surprisingly lush with broom, pines, and holm oaks.

When planning your visit, remember that the trail's difficulty can vary, so sturdy shoes are highly recommended due to uneven ground. The starting point is conveniently located near the historical Medici Palace, which also houses the Vesuvius National Park headquarters. While some sections are manageable for a less strenuous experience, longer routes require good fitness and sure-footedness. Consider the time of year and weather conditions, as the path alternates between open and shaded areas.

This trail offers a unique opportunity to explore the volcanic geology of the Vesuvius National Park, allowing you to walk along the boundary between Mount Somma and Vesuvius. Unlike the more frequented Gran Cono trail, this route provides a wilder, more tranquil, and secluded experience, immersing you deeply in nature. You will observe various volcanic layers and structures, gaining insight into the evolution of this dramatic landscape. The Medici Palace also serves as an environmental education center, adding a cultural dimension to your hike.
