The nature reserve changes from a plateau forest into a slope forest that ends at the Geul. Behind this lie damp chalk grasslands. In the plateau forest lies the Meertensgroeve, a former open marl quarry. The deep, sheltered crater is now a protected natural monument and a herd of goats graze there.
