    Hiking

This unique area is one of very few official overlooks available within El Malpais National Monument. The viewing area offers sights of Mount Taylor and canyon walls and rocks. The sandstone surrounding this area is Dakota Sandstone and offers a stable surface for standing, with there being some picnic tables and and vault toilets also near this feature.

Embark on an easy hike along the Sandstone Bluffs Trail, where you will discover sweeping panoramic views of the El Malpais region. This route offers a unique contrast between ancient 200-million-year-old Dakota Sandstone and the younger McCarty's Lava Flow. You can spot the tall peak of Mount Taylor to the northeast and the Zuni Mountains to the west. The trail covers 2.9 miles (4.7 km) with an elevation gain of 222 feet (68 metres), making it a pleasant journey that takes about 1 hour and 16 minutes to complete.

When planning your visit, be aware that the terrain can have deep cracks and drop-offs, so careful navigation is important. The bluffs can become dangerous due to high winds, lightning, rain, snow, and ice, so it is wise to exercise caution throughout the year. Always check weather conditions before heading out to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience on the trail.

Beyond the geological wonders, the Sandstone Bluffs Trail holds historical and cultural significance. As you hike, keep an eye out for petroglyphs etched into the rock, natural arches formed over millennia, and the remnants of the historical Garrett Homestead Ruins. These features offer a glimpse into the past and add another layer of discovery to your outdoor adventure in this remarkable landscape.
