People first began leaving crosses on the former hill fort mound following the 1831 Uprising against Russian rule. Families used the crosses to memorialize rebels whose bodies they couldn't recover.

Pope John Paul II visited the hill in 1993, declaring it a place for hope, peace, love, and sacrifice. Today, it remains open to anyone; visitors of all backgrounds freely add their own crosses with written prayers or messages.
