    Hiking

From this point it is possible to take a shuttle which saves a few kilometers of walking on gippabile. Low cost but pay attention to the large turnout.

Departure point of the shuttle bus from Wold to Aqua Bianca.
For only € 3 p / p you will be brought up and you have suddenly paid for the return ride. Last departure is at 5.30 pm. Keep that in mind.
It is highly recommended to use this service. You save at least 1 hour of walking time to the Aqua Bianca.
Don't forget to pay for the parking (day ticket = only 2 €)
Have fun walking and give my regards to Rossa :-)

Embark on the difficult Rifugio Barba Ferrero Loop, a challenging hike that covers 8.3 miles (13.4 km) with a significant elevation gain of 3169 feet (966 metres). This route, estimated to take 5 hours and 57 minutes, leads you through varied alpine terrain within the stunning Parco Naturale dell'Alta Val Sesia e dell'Alta Val Strona. As you traverse rich pastures and rocky steps, you will be treated to constant panoramas of the south face of Monte Rosa and its glaciers. The trail demands very good fitness and sure-footedness, but rewards you with unique views, including the Barba Ferrero Refuge perched like an eagle's nest.

Before you set out, be aware that this difficult hike requires very good fitness and sure-footedness, particularly on its steeper sections. You can begin your journey from either Alagna or Acqua Bianca, with parking generally available in Alagna. The best time to visit is typically between May and November, when conditions are most favorable for hiking. Always check local conditions before heading out, as weather in the high mountains can change quickly.

This loop offers a unique opportunity to observe geological features known as "boilers," which are carved by subglacial streams. The trail provides continuous views of the majestic Monte Rosa and its surrounding glaciers, making it a highlight for those seeking alpine grandeur. The Barba Ferrero Refuge itself is a notable landmark, offering expansive vistas over the valley below. This route stands out in the region for its combination of challenging terrain and spectacular natural beauty.

Embark on the Glaciological Trail, a moderate hike spanning 6.6 miles (10.6 km) with a significant 2494 feet (760 metres) of elevation gain. This route offers expansive views of the basin and impressive vistas of glaciers and peaks, including Monte San Giacomo. You will wind through larch woods, which are particularly striking when their leaves turn golden in autumn. A highlight is crossing a suspension bridge over a glacial stream, offering a unique perspective on the landscape. The terrain varies from dirt roads to sections carved directly into the slope, including some steep descents over smoothed slabs. Plan for about 4 hours and 50 minutes to complete this journey through a changing alpine environment.

When planning your visit, consider that the trail is especially beautiful in autumn when the larch trees display their vibrant colors. Always check the local weather forecast before you go, as conditions in the mountains can change quickly. The route includes sections of dirt road, asphalt, and parts carved directly into the slope, so wear appropriate footwear for varied terrain. Be prepared for some steep descents over smoothed slabs and scattered debris.

This trail is more than just a hike; it functions as an open-air laboratory within Parco Naturale Alta Valsesia. Along the way, you will find plaques and monitoring instruments that tell the compelling story of the Forni Glacier's retreat. The route provides educational insights into glaciology and the ongoing impact of climate change on this alpine environment. You will also pass a small artificial lake, marking the historical extent of the Forni Glacier.
