The ascent to Pico Veleta plunges you into a landscape that changes dramatically, from views of Granada and verdant olive groves to the desolate yet spectacular high mountain terrain of Sierra Nevada. As you climb, you'll witness the smooth asphalt transform into a more rocky and challenging surface near the summit, offering an unparalleled sense of achievement as you conquer Europe's highest paved road.
This is one of the most demanding road cycling routes, covering a distance of 55.0 miles (88.6 km) with an elevation gain of 8859 feet (2700 metres) that will take you approximately 5 hours and 49 minutes. Its difficulty is high, making excellent physical fitness essential. Keep in mind that full access to the summit is often restricted by snow, generally opening only from June to mid-September.
Pico Veleta is a "bucket list" experience for many cyclists, not only for its impressive altitude and the challenge it presents but also for the panoramic views that stretch to the Mediterranean on clear days. It's a place where many professionals train at altitude, which underscores the magnitude of this climb in the Sierra Nevada cycling routes Pico Veleta.
