The church was built in 1785 and consecrated around 1798 in honor of Saint Medard
In 1487 Vilters rose to become its own parish with patron St. Medard - the baroque, decorative parish church was built in his honor in 1785-87.
In the Middle Ages, Vilters belonged ecclesiastically to Mels. A branch church attested to in 1364 was separated from the mother church in Mels and in 1487 raised to the Vilters parish church. The abbot of Pfäfers had it rebuilt in 1785-87
