The Tremont Temple was founded in 1839 under the name The Free Baptist Church. Timothy Gilbert, a piano maker from Boston, resigned from the Charles Street Baptist Church when the congregation disapproved of him inviting a black family to Sunday services in his pews. In 1843, Gilbert bought the Tremont Theater. Tremont Temple is the first integrated church in America. It offered free admission and thus promoted ethnic diversity in the church community.
As it developed under various names, the church became the Tremont Temple Baptist Church in 1891.
