The statue ‘De Fransman’ (The Frenchman) is a tribute to the hundreds of Flemish seasonal workers who, to earn a living, left their homes and belongings behind to perform heavy labor, especially in France, in the beet harvest.
With their ‘bouzache’ on their shoulder, they traveled from the station in Burst to Tourcoing, from where they dispersed to French farmers via ‘Le Bureau d’Immigration’. Due to the large number of seasonal workers, Heldergem was nicknamed ‘Fransmandorp’ (Village of the Frenchmen). In 1900, Heldergem had over 200 seasonal workers, accounting for about 16% of the total population.
