    Hiking

Sandstone Quarry is the third pullout along the Scenic Loop Drive. Several popular hiking trails including Turtlehead Peak and Calico Tanks begin here. Along with panoramic views of the Calico Hills area, a historic quarry, you can frequently see rock climbers on the rock formations above you.

You cannot access the site without a reservation - and there is a reason for this - the Sandstone Quarry is a stunningly beautiful rock which attracts a lot of interested people. I would recommend this to anyone who is nearby or visiting Las Vegas to drive the extra miles.

    Hiking

Sandstone Quarry is one of the most popular stopping spots by tourists and locals. According to the history of the area there are several multi-ton blocks of sandstone abandoned when the third try at quarrying sandstone declared bankruptcy in 1912 and the quarry closed.

Embark on the Calico Tanks Trail, an easy 2.4-mile (3.9 km) hike through the vibrant landscape of Red Rock Canyon. You'll navigate a mix of sandy paths and slickrock surfaces, gaining 443 feet (135 metres) in elevation over approximately 1 hour and 11 minutes. The route leads you past striking colorful sandstone formations and into narrow canyons. Keep an eye out for the hidden Calico Tanks, which sometimes hold water after rain. From the overlook, you'll be treated to expansive views of the canyon, with a surprising glimpse of the Las Vegas Strip in the distance.

Before you head out, remember that Red Rock Canyon requires reservations for entry during its peak season, which runs from October 1 to May 31. This helps manage visitor flow and preserve the natural environment. You can find parking conveniently located at the Sandstone Quarry trailhead, which is where your adventure begins. Plan your visit accordingly to ensure a smooth experience.

This trail offers a unique opportunity to witness geology estimated to be 65 million years old, showcasing the area's ancient past. The Turtlehead Peak Trail offers a challenging yet rewarding hike through the Red Rock Canyon landscape. You will navigate varied terrain, starting with easier paths before encountering steeper, rockier sections with loose gravel and some boulder scrambling. As you ascend, you'll be surrounded by classic desert scenery, including towering sandstone cliffs and resilient plants like yucca and pinyon trees. This moderate route covers 4.7 miles (7.6 km) and involves a significant climb of 1894 feet (577 metres), typically taking around 3 hours to complete.

When planning your visit, be aware that timed entry reservations are required for the Scenic Loop within Red Rock Canyon during its peak season, which runs from October 1st to May 31st. It is crucial to bring at least 2 quarts of water, as the trail offers very little shade and the hike is strenuous. Starting early in the day is advisable, especially during warmer months, to avoid the midday heat.

From the summit of Turtlehead Peak, you can expect spectacular panoramic views that stretch across Red Rock Canyon and the Calico Basin. On clear days, your gaze can even reach as far as Las Vegas, providing a unique perspective of the region. This trail stands out for its dramatic elevation gain and the diverse desert ecosystem you experience along the way.
