A truly impressive fountain 🤩. It's definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

The fountain known as Granfonte was built in 1652 at the behest of Prince Placido Branciforti, in the same place there was already an Arab fountain called "Fonte di Tavi". The project follows the Flemish Baroque style then very popular on the island. The fountain became the center of the community by supplying water through its twenty-four mouths. The same water supplied the fountains of the botanical garden. The drainage channel connected to the main basin was used, until recently, as a public wash house.

A detour to the town of Leonforte we came to the Granfonte (large well). It was built in the style of the Sicilian Baroque and served as a large cattle bath. A look through the openings in the building gives a very nice view of the surrounding landscape.

Look out for views of Lago Pozzillo and distant volcanic peaks like Mount Etna, adding to the diverse scenery of cultivated land and natural woodlands.

This is a hard bike ride, requiring very good fitness from touring cyclists. Embark on the Leonforte and Assoro Loop via Sicily Divide, a challenging touring bicycle route that takes you through Sicily's picturesque interior. You will cycle 31.2 miles (50.2 km), gaining 3789 feet (1155 metres) in elevation over an estimated 3 hours and 53 minutes. Expect a journey filled with rolling hills, vibrant olive groves, vineyards, and citrus orchards, offering panoramic views that might include Mount Etna and Lake Pozzillo.

You can visit the Agira Historic Center with its ancient castle, or marvel at the Granfonte of Leonforte, a Baroque-Renaissance fountain boasting 24 operational bronze spouts.
