Monte della Riva e Zocca – loop from Montalbano

Embark on the Monte della Riva e Zocca loop from Montalbano, a moderate hike through the diverse landscapes of the Modena Apennines. This 5.9-mile (9.4 km) route takes you across wooded ridges and slopes, offering varied terrain and panoramic views. You will gain 912 feet (278 metres) in elevation, with the entire journey typically completed in about 2 hours and 46 minutes. A highlight is reaching the false summit of Monte della Cisterna, where you can enjoy extensive vistas of the Panaro valley, the Modenese plain, and distant Apennine peaks like Monte Cimone. The southern side of Monte della Riva features steep, craggy sections overlooking the Rio di Missano, while the northern slope is gently forested. The summit area is covered in oak, chestnut, and black pine trees. If you hike in autumn, you will see the woods vibrant with color. This trail is a great way to experience the natural beauty and varied topography of the region. You will find the path mostly accessible, but some steeper sections may require sure-footedness. The Monte della Cisterna false summit is not only a viewpoint but also home to an oratory built in the late 1800s. This spot offers a spacious picnic area, making it an ideal place to pause and refuel during your hike. Historically, a castle once stood here, though little remains today. The area is rich in chestnut trees, which are particularly beautiful during the autumn season. The mountain's geological makeup of calcareous sandstones is similar to the renowned Pietra di Bismántova, adding a unique natural element to your experience. The presence of ancient settlements, such as Serra di Montalbano, also adds a historical dimension to this scenic loop.
