Embark on the Rocche di Sant'Anna from Sestri Levante loop tour, a moderate hike that takes you through Mediterranean scrub, terraced olive groves, and gardens. The trail covers 2.8 miles (4.5 km) with an elevation gain of 395 feet (120 metres), typically taking about 1 hour and 27 minutes to complete. You will experience varied terrain, including natural paths and some steeper sections on the ascent towards the Sant'Anna ruins. From these ruins, you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Sestri Levante, its two bays, and the Tigullio Gulf. The return leg follows the ancient "Strada dei Ponti," offering a gentler descent.
This moderate loop is suitable for most hikers, including families with children, though some sections do require sure-footedness. You should wear proper trekking or walking shoes to navigate the varied surfaces. Remember to bring water, as there are no sources available along the path. The trail is particularly recommended for sunset views, offering a magical perspective over the coastline.
The Rocche di Sant'Anna trail boasts significant historical value, following ancient Roman roads and featuring the ruins of the 16th or 17th-century Sant'Anna Church. You will also encounter five well-preserved 18th-century single-arch bridges that span the Fico torrent, originally built for transporting slate. This area is recognized as a Site of Community Importance, highlighting its environmental significance. Many viewpoints along the route are equipped with benches, perfect for resting and soaking in the scenery.
