The first bishop of Rome whose burial place can be documented is that of Zephyrinus (198-217) in the burial zone above the catacomb of Calixtus I. Urban I. (222-235) was, according to the entry in the Liber Pontificalis, in the catacomb The following popes were buried in the "crypt of the popes" rediscovered by de Rossi in 1854: Pontianus (230-235), Anterus (235-236), Fabianus (236-250), Lucius I (253-254 ), Stephen I (254–257), Dionysius (260–267), Felix I (269–274), and Eutychianus (274–282)
