Initial considerations for building a bridge at its current location arose before the First World War. However, the project was repeatedly postponed. Construction began in November 1962. The steel for the bridge was imported from the USA. The inauguration took place on August 6, 1966, under the name Ponte de Salazar (after the then Portuguese dictator).
