A documentary mention dates back to January 13, 1310, when the bishop of Würzburg, Andreas von Gundelfingen, gave the hay tithe in "ville Ineltorff"[2] to the Langheim monastery. In the 14th century the town passed from the Bishopric of Würzburg to the Lords of Lichtenstein. In the 15th century, the Tambach monastery office took over the whole of Oberelldorf. The place thus belonged to the free monastic villages of the monastery office.

The Catholic branch church of St. Nicholas was built in its current form between 1710 and 1720. The core of the choir tower church dates from the 14th/15th century. Century. It has a neo-Gothic high altar.
