The construction of this Sanctuary was ordered by the Cardinal and Bishop of Jaén D. Baltasar Moscoso y Sandoval, on the occasion of the discoveries that occurred in the area that today occupies the temple, in 1628, which were attributed to those more than 3,000 souls who suffered martyrdom for their condition as Christians, at a time of the Roman Empire, in which Christianity was persecuted by order of the Emperor Diocletian.
