The economic profile of the town of Hirschberg shaped leather production until 1992, when a small tannery developed into the largest sole leather factory in Germany in the first half of the 20th century. After the transformation into a GmbH in 1990 and the takeover by an Austrian leather manufacturer, the company went bankrupt in 1993 and was closed. In 1993 it was decided to demolish the factory, which ended in 1996.
Today a museum for tannery and city history is housed in the former administration building.
