The mighty trees, which once served as a meeting point for herds and as a marker for the boundary lines, got their name from an act of recklessness:
A young shepherd from Herdorf named Peter Trapp set his dog on a grazing herd from Biersdorf over 100 years ago. The dog drove the animals (including a bull) to the Bölles oaks, where a bloody fight broke out between the bulls from Herdorf and Biersdorf. To everyone's surprise, the incident ended peacefully and the historical story has been preserved to this day.
