With the resumption of copper slate mining in the mid-1930s, the number of miners required increased. The domestic labor market was unable to meet this demand. Miners and smelters were recruited and initially, as living space was scarce, they were housed in temporary accommodation. Mining settlements were needed, and two settlements were built in Sontra from 1937 onwards. The development (settlement I), located south of the outskirts, was to have 360 residential units. The central square was Barbaraplatz, where the topping-out ceremony for the new settlement took place in October 1937. Today the settlement houses are privatized.
