The largest medieval church building in the center of Alkmaar was already called the Grote Kerk when it was built because of its size. The Grote Kerk is traditionally not only the largest and tallest church building in Alkmaar, but also the church that has been most respected over the centuries and consistently praised as the city's jewel. The building was originally dedicated to Saint Laurens, which is why the church has been referred to as Saint Laurens Church for centuries.
