The Nordbahnhof (Estació del Nord) was opened in 1861 in the Eixample district and was a central terminus station for rail traffic in northern Catalonia for decades. After the cessation of train operations in 1972, the imposing Art Nouveau building transformed into Barcelona's most important bus station for national and international long-distance bus routes. Today, the building complex houses, in addition to the busy bus terminal, a sports hall that was used during the 1992 Olympic Games, as well as an adjacent city park.
