    Garde Canal Trail

The Garde Canal Trail invites you to explore a fascinating landscape within the Verdon Regional Natural Park, following the path of an ancient historic canal. Along its 9.1 kilometers, with an elevation gain of 238 meters, you'll delve into a moss-covered "fairy-tale forest" and enjoy breathtaking views of the Verdon Gorges. This moderately difficult route takes you along varied stone and dirt paths, including passages through dark tunnels that add a touch of adventure, making this hike a unique experience lasting approximately 2 hours and 46 minutes.

To plan your visit, it's crucial to bring a flashlight for the tunnels, as some are long and completely dark. Spring and autumn are the best seasons to hike the trail, offering pleasant temperatures and vibrant vegetation. Please note that dogs are generally not permitted on this route, and the trail is not suitable for strollers due to its terrain and narrow sections.

This trail is notable for its rich history, as it follows the route of a canal built between 1865 and 1875 to supply water to Aix-en-Provence, with remnants such as the lock keeper's house still visible. The area is a protected Natura 2000 site, home to diverse wildlife including golden eagles and coypus, and is vital for bat protection, which is why deviating into secondary tunnels is prohibited.
