Embark on an easy hike along Via Francisca del Lucomagno: Stage 2, a route that guides you through the lush, forested areas of the Campo dei Fiori Regional Park. You will cover 2.7 miles (4.4 km) with a manageable elevation gain of 753 feet (229 metres), making it a pleasant journey for most. The trail offers a steady ascent towards the historic Sacro Monte of Varese, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which you can reach in about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

For your visit, this trail is generally accessible year-round, but you will find the most comfortable hiking conditions between March/April and October/November. You can look for parking options either near the starting point of the trail or directly at the Sacro Monte of Varese. Always remember to check local conditions before you head out to ensure a smooth experience.

This particular stage is notable for its destination, the Sacro Monte of Varese, where you can explore the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte and admire the impressive statue of Moses. The journey itself provides a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the region while progressing along a historic pilgrimage path. It offers a blend of serene nature and cultural heritage, making it a rewarding short adventure.

Embark on a difficult 9.9-mile (16.0 km) hike that takes you through the historically rich landscape of the Campo dei Fiori Regional Park. You will gain 2399 feet (731 metres) in elevation over approximately 5 hours and 44 minutes. The route begins with a wide, cobbled pedestrian path leading to Sacro Monte di Varese, where 14 Baroque chapels line the Via Sacra. At the summit, you reach the medieval village of Santa Maria del Monte, offering expansive views. Continuing to Monte Tre Croci, you will find three large white concrete crosses marking the summit, providing further panoramic vistas of the Varese hills and Po Valley. The trail includes natural paths, unpaved sections, and winds through tranquil oak and chestnut forests.

This loop tour requires good to very good fitness and sure-footedness due to its varied terrain, which includes alpine sections beyond the initial paved path. While the first part to Sacro Monte di Varese is accessible for all skill levels, the full circuit is considered hard. Sturdy shoes are recommended for the longer route. The trail is located within a regional park, so be mindful of local regulations. You can find restaurants and amenities in the village of Santa Maria del Monte at the top of Sacro Monte di Varese.

The Sacro Monte di Varese is a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for its artistic and religious significance. The 14 chapels along the Via Sacra are a testament to 17th-century art and architecture, featuring intricate frescoes and sculptures. This spiritual journey offers consistently praised panoramic views throughout the route, culminating in spectacular vistas from Santa Maria del Monte and Monte Tre Croci. You will also pass historical points of interest like the abandoned Grand Hotel Campo dei Fiori, adding a layer of intrigue to the natural beauty.
