Towering 2,201 feet (671 m) above the Atlantic Ocean, Slievemore is a windswept, wild and wonderful peak. This ‘Big Mountain’ is a superb objective and is the second highest point on the ruggedly beautiful Achil Island in Ireland’s County Mayo.

Slievemore is a nunatak, a great fortress of quartzite and schist that the great glaciers of the last Ice Age were unable to grind down. It rises in isolation above the surroundings, its summit a magnificent platform for admiring huge ocean views, glistening Keel Lough to the south, east to the peaks of the mainland and west towards mighty Croaghaun, the island’s loftiest peak and home to Ireland’s highest sea cliffs.

An island peak boasting a stunning panorama of mountains, coast and ocean

From any angle, Slievemore is a glorious sight. From the picturesque Dugort Beach, the crags of its eastern ridge rise in a dramatic arc towards a tapered summit. Ascents can be made from the village of Dugort, where there are a few accommodation options, while more can be found in the village of Keel to the south of the peak. Routes from Dugort are magnificent and ascend the fine east ridge on intermittent paths.

From other angles, Slievemore’s green bulk is more graceful, rising elegantly above the crashing waves. The mountain is also famous for its haunting Deserted Village, the remains of which cower beneath the mountain’s southern slopes. Approaches from this direction are also superb, taking you from its heathery lower flanks to its rocky upper environs.

    Hiking

Slievemore is the second highest peak on Achill Island after Croaghaun, in County Mayo, Ireland. Its elevation is 671 m (2,201 ft) and it has a trig pointed summit. A stunning peak, it is also an Irish Hewitt. At the base of Slievemore lies the Deserted Village. The village is divided into three areas called Tuar, Tuar Riabach and Faiche. There are approximately 100 houses in the village, aligned north-south and parallel to each other.
For the ascent of Slievemore, a crossing is recommended, e.g. coming from the east of Doogort to the west. The ascent is steep and strenuous, sure-footedness is required. But the views across the beaches to the east and to Keel to the south are fantastic.

    Hiking

This is definitely a challenging trail, and should only be done with good weather and a reliable GPS device. There is mostly no trail and some scrambling to get to the top. The ascend is steep and the descend is boggy even when it hasn’t rained for a while. Due to wayfinding plan more time, we did it in five hours including breaks and photo stops.
