Moel Siabod and Daear Ddu Ridge Loop

Embark on the Moel Siabod and Daear Ddu Ridge Loop, a difficult hike spanning 8.3 miles (13.4 km) with a significant elevation gain of 2520 feet (768 metres). This challenging route, estimated to take around 4 hours and 59 minutes, offers a diverse landscape as you ascend towards the summit. You will navigate a beginner-friendly scramble along the Daear Ddu Ridge, experiencing varied terrain that includes historical slate quarry ruins and the serene Llyn y Foel before reaching the peak. From the top of Moel Siabod, you are rewarded with expansive 360-degree views of Snowdonia's major peaks, making it a prime spot for panoramic vistas. This trail is perfect if you are looking for a rewarding and strenuous day out in the mountains.

To prepare for this demanding hike, ensure you wear sturdy shoes and have some alpine experience, especially for the Grade 1 scramble sections. The trail starts from Capel Curig, where parking is available, and the initial approach follows a road before a steep uphill climb past Rhos farm. Be ready for potentially wet and boggy sections, particularly around Llyn y Foel. You should also be comfortable with self-navigation, as the path may become less defined in scrambling areas.

This loop is a standout in Snowdonia National Park, not just for its physical challenge but also for its unique blend of natural beauty and historical elements. The route takes you through a landscape shaped by both ancient geology and human industry, with the slate quarry ruins offering a glimpse into the region's past. The climb to Moel Siabod is renowned for providing some of the most spectacular and comprehensive views across the entire park, allowing you to appreciate the scale and grandeur of the Welsh mountains from a single vantage point.
