Slightly bigger than life size sculpture of the famous writer, claimed as a son of Oakland and honored with naming the redeveloped waterfront area.
Next to it is a memorial to the ferry service established for the pony express, a short-lived mid 19th century mail-relay by horse, before the completion of the railway.

Some PR genius had the idea to name the redeveloped waterfront at Oakland's inner harbor after the famous writer who grew up nearby after age 10 and allegedly briefly worked in the port and on ships from here, complete with statues and moving an old cabin to a square nearby.
