The City Wall that is dominant here dates from the 15th century, but in the 16th century it was already outdated when gunpowder and cannons appeared on the battlefield. It was then reinforced with an extra wall and an earthen wall to last for a while.
The Hunner Park was built between 1876 and 1882 when the walls in Nijmegen were demolished. This part of the city walls was spared. The original park was created after a design by landscape architect Liévin Rosseels from Leuven, who also designed the Kronenburgerpark.
