The parish church of the Assumption of Mary in Grafenau was built in the 15th century and was originally a Gothic church. It contains Baroque altars dating from around 1730, as well as numerous Gothic and Baroque figures. After several fires, it was continually expanded and received its first ceiling painting in 1734. In 1904, the single-nave structure was enlarged to a three-aisled building. The town wall dates back to the 15th century. Until 1790, the walls and towers were regularly renovated for defensive purposes; after that, they were left to decay.

On the main street in Grafenau, southeast of the pilgrimage church, stands this remarkable memorial commemorating the victims of the following wars in this region:

1870/71: 8 war victims
WWI: 105 war victims
WWI: 269 war victims
It is important that these terrible wartime events are remembered here at the church so that they are not forgotten and, hopefully, never repeated.
