On the St. Peter hill high above Lake Kaltern, near the Rastenbachklamm and visible from the "Klotzbank" lookout point in Altenburg, the ruins of St. Peter rise in the middle of the forest. The remains of an originally three-aisled basilica from the time of Christianization can still be found in the walls today: Its origins date back to the 4th to 6th century AD, making it probably the oldest church in South Tyrol and one of the oldest sacred buildings in all of Tyrol. It was first mentioned in the so-called "Vigilius Letter" in 1191.
